Tailings / dams / high-risk infrastructure (mining & water infrastructure)
- For TSFs and dams, “environmental authorisation” is not enough—best practice is to combine environmental approvals with governance and safety requirements:
- Dam safety approvals / registrations (country-specific)
- Tailings governance roles and plans (e.g., EoR, GISTM Compliance, OMS/OMP, emergency preparedness)
- Seepage, water balance, and monitoring approvals (often part of EMP/water permit conditions)
- design basis reports, monitoring data, inspection reports, emergency plans.
Environmental Audits
Environmental compliance audits include:
- Environmental Authorisation (EA) Audits
- Focus on evaluating compliance with approved Environmental Authorisations and associated conditions in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA) and the EIA Regulations.
- Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) Audits (including Regulation 34)
- Assess the implementation and effectiveness of approved EMPrs, including mitigation measures, monitoring obligations, and environmental management commitments (MPRDA and EIA Regulations).
- Water Use Licence (WUL) and GN 704 Audits
- Evaluate compliance with Water Use Licence conditions and Government Notice No. 704 of 1999, as amended, issued under the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998) (NWA), with specific focus on water use and related activities.
- Waste Management Licence (WML) Audits
- Review licensed waste management activities, operational controls, and waste handling practices in accordance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008) (NEM:WA).
- Atmospheric Emission Licence (AEL) Audits
- Examine compliance with AEL conditions, including emission limits, monitoring requirements, and reporting obligations as regulated under the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act, 2004 (Act No. 39 of 2004) (NEM:AQA).
- Mining Right (MR) and MPRDA-Related Audits
- Consider compliance with Mining Rights, Mining Permits, and associated environmental approvals issued in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act No. 28 of 2002) (MPRDA), including alignment with approved EMPrs and Environmental Authorisations.
All audits are supported by clear, defensible audit reports that document supporting evidence, findings, compliance status and recommendations, structured to satisfy applicable regulatory submission requirements.

- Wetland rehabilitation, management, and monitoring plans
We use nationally accredited methods to evaluate the ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems:
- SASS5 & MIRAI: We assess macroinvertebrate communities to determine water quality and habitat health. Using the South African Scoring System (SASS5) and MIRAI, we identify sensitivity levels to provide an accurate Ecological Category (from Excellent to Poor).
- Fish Response (FRAI): We evaluate fish community health by comparing observed populations against natural reference states, identifying the direct impacts of human activity.
- Diatom Analysis: By analysing algae silica walls, we detect long-term trends in nutrient enrichment, salinity, and organic pollution.
- Ecotoxicological Testing (DEEEP): We conduct laboratory toxicity assays across three trophic levels (bacteria, zooplankton, and fish) to determine the real-world biological impact of water constituents.
- In-Situ Water Quality: Real-time monitoring of pH, oxygen, and conductivity using calibrated instruments, benchmarked against DWAF standards.
Wetland Assessment & Management
Our integrated approach combines physical health assessments with functional value:
WET-Health (PES): We determine the Present Ecological State by analysing hydrology, geomorphology, water quality, and vegetation to see how much a system has deviated from its natural state.
- WET-Eco Services: We quantify the functional value of wetlands, such as flood attenuation, water purification, and biodiversity support.
- Compliance & Risk: We calculate Ecological Importance and Sensitivity (EIS) to set a Recommended Ecological Category (REC). This guides risk assessments and the determination of necessary buffer zones to safeguard ecosystem processes.
