Environmental Monitoring and Control

Eco Elementum has a range of services available to our clients to ensure total compliance with not only the requirements of national and international legislation, but also to support site specific environmental management programmes and guide the management and mitigation practices on site:

Air quality sampling and analysis

  • Dust deposition measurement according to the method ASTM 1739 as recommended in the National Dust Control Regulations (DEA, 2013)
  • Particulate Matter (PM) dust
  • Passive diffuse sampling (gases and vapours)
  • Point source location monitoring
  • Baseline trending and screening
  • Engineering control evaluations
  • Receiving environment and fence line monitoring

Noise monitoring and measurement (SANS 10103:2008)

  • Generally A-weighted equivalent sound pressure levels (LAeq) for duration not less than 10 minutes per monitoring point
  • Daytime (06:00 to 22:00) and night time (22:00 to 06:00) measurements

Environmental Control Officers

Independent, competent persons in a position to influence people’s behavior during the planning, construction, operational, decommissioning and rehabilitation phases of a project; with selected environmental monitoring instruments in order to assure (and at times ensure), record and communicate compliance to applicable environmental conditions and performance specifications.

Rehabilitation and Reclamation

  • Ensuring compliance with the latest mine closure provisioning regulations – Regulations Pertaining to the Financial Provision for Prospecting, Exploration, Mining or Production Operations: GNR 1147 Financial Provisioning Regulation.
  • Development and compilation of the three plans which are required (per mining right/permit/prospecting right/permit), with associated financial provision for each:
    • Annual rehabilitation plan (concurrent);
    • Final rehabilitation, decommissioning and mine closure plan; and
    • Environmental risk assessment report (residual and latent impacts)
  • Determination of the liability towards post closure water management explicitly for pumping and treatment of polluted or extraneous water.
  • Detailed itemisation and actual true costs of all closure related activities for all three the required plans.
  • Determination, review and assessment undertaken by a specialist or specialists (‘Independent person who is qualified by virtue of demonstrable knowledge, qualifications, skills or expertise in mining, environmental, resource economy and financial fields’).
  • Landscape planning, design and material mass balance calculations.
